The Melody mode allow entering melody notes into the keyboard. If a chord already exists in the keyboard, then the keyboard will contain both the chord and the melody note. A melody note appears on the keyboard with a green dot:

At any point in time there can only exist one melody note on the keyboard. If you select a different melody note, then any previously existing melody note disappears.
As discussed in Switching Modes, you can switch to melody mode from any other mode. For example, if the program is in Chords mode, then right click the mode switch button until "melody" appears on its face. Then left click on the button to switch to Melody mode.

Once in Melody mode, moving the mouse pointer on the big keyboard while holding the left mouse button down only erases the melody note. The chord notes, if present on the keyboard, are not erased. The only way to clear both melody and non-melody notes is with the Clear button.
The main attribute of the Melody mode is the music staff. It makes it easy to enter melody notes as written in the lead sheet music. And it works in a manner similar to entering notes in the keyboard.
In fact, melody notes can be entered directly on the keyboard by clicking on a keyboard key with the right mouse button. Otherwise, to use the staff, do the following:

Use the left mouse button to temporarily select the corresponding keyboard key. The note is unselected as soon as the button is released.
Use the right mouse button to select the corresponding keyboard key. To release it, click on it with the left mouse button.
To sharpen or flatten a selected note, use these buttons:

The first time a melody note is added to a song, the program will ask if the key signature is correct to give you the opportunity to change it. Setting the proper key signature is important and is often initially forgotten when working with melody lines. See Setting the Key Signature.
After a melody note is selected, the resulting keyboard -- which might also contain the notes of a chord -- can be added as a "chord" in the chord table by using the following buttons (and one shortcut):

Appends the chord to the end of the chord table.

Inserts the chord before or after the current chord.
Important Shortcut: clicking twice with the right mouse button on the same staff note adds the melody note (and any chord notes present on the keyboard) as the last chord in the chord table. This is the fastest way to enter the melody lines of the song. See Entering Melody Notes in The Best Way to Enter Full Songs.
